Samsung's Taylor Chip Fab Is Staffing Up: What Austin Job Seekers Should Know

TAYLOR, TX — Out on US 79, past Hutto, Samsung's $17 billion chip plant in Taylor is moving from construction site to working fab, and the hiring is following it. Korean business outlets reported in mid-September that trial production of Tesla's next AI chip has started at the plant. Recruiting for the engineers, technicians and trainers who keep a fab running has picked up at the same time.

Samsung expects about 1,500 permanent employees in Taylor by the end of 2026, and at least 1,800 eventually.

Samsung Taylor Hiring: Where the Plant Stands Now

The fab ran two years behind its original late-2024 opening. In February, a Samsung spokeswoman told the Taylor Press that the plant would be running by the end of the year. She said several hundred employees had already started in Taylor, many of them moving over from Samsung's longtime campus in northeast Austin since November 2025.

Equipment moved in this spring. In September, Seoul Economic Daily reported, citing industry sources, that some lines had begun trial runs of Tesla's AI5 chip on a 2-nanometer process. It also reported that Samsung wants mass-production verification finished by year-end. Samsung hasn't confirmed every step, so treat it as reported, not announced.

🔥 Who Samsung Is Recruiting

Reports in late September, drawing on Korean outlet Newsis, said Samsung Austin Semiconductor has widened its search. The roles named fall into a few groups:

  • Process engineers in etch, metal processes and ion implantation
  • Facility and equipment engineers for qualification, preventive maintenance and failure analysis
  • Quality and reliability engineers, including materials and parts quality on site
  • Data-focused engineers who analyze production output
  • Technical trainers who get new hires certified for their jobs on the floor

In April, the Korea Herald also found cleanroom technician roles posted, a snapshot that has since changed.

To be clear about what hasn't happened: Samsung has not announced a current number of open positions or a public hiring event for Taylor. Watch the official Samsung Semiconductor US careers page and set an alert for Austin and Taylor.

The Ripple Effect Along US 79 and SH 130

The fab is only part of the picture. Samsung has said its suppliers of materials, components and services are setting up in Taylor, Hutto and nearby towns, and it expects them to add thousands of jobs. Electricians, HVAC techs and maintenance crews are needed at every advanced plant, and those skills carry over to the suppliers too.

🎓 Training Paths if You're Not Fab-Ready Yet

Two state-funded programs are aimed directly at this pipeline:

  • Temple College's Central Texas Chips Hub received a $9.8 million Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund grant. Based at the college's Taylor campus a few miles from Samsung, it offers short-term credentials, an associate degree and an applied bachelor's track with Texas A&M University-Central Texas. Veterans are a named focus.
  • TSTC's East Williamson County campus in Hutto received $3.5 million from the same fund for a 10-week Accelerated Semiconductor Technician Training Program with a mock cleanroom. A launch date has not been published, so call the campus before you plan around it.
